The journey from DOing to BEing…
Too many of us are over-committed, stressed, fatigued and at risk of, or suffering from a chronic illness.
I was like that. Are you?
What it was like
At the end of 2012 I was a successful commercial barrister.
I was addicted to doing. That’s how I measured my worth. It’s how I justified breathing air and taking up space.
So I took on too much work.
Most nights I sat up until after midnight making sure, as much as possible, that nothing the next day would be left to chance. I couldn’t sleep until every comma and full stop was in its place.
Mornings didn’t start until I’d had an injection of caffeine. Two lattes with double shots in my Keep Cup … super-sized … of course.
I was tired … all the time. I ached from head to toe, especially after a workout. No doctor could tell me what was wrong. I asked my Facebook friends if they had seen my oomph?
I had no peace of mind. I lashed out at those who loved me. My thoughts were all about the stories of the past and how just maybe one day, if things went according to MY plan, I would be happy.
Despite having meditated off and on for years, it never seemed to hit home. By 2012, there didn’t seem to be anything to be happy about. Only a relentless foreboding of more of the same. And I wasn’t sure how I could keep on going. I second guessed everything I did.
Everything came to a climax on 3 January 2013 when I was diagnosed with a slow growing lymphatic cancer … Stage IIIA follicular lymphoma. I was shocked, partly because I hadn’t noticed the massive tumour in my stomach, but also because I was told my life wasn’t going to be as long as I had always thought.
I panicked and started searching for the magic bullet. There wasn’t one. And the doctors told me the cancer is incurable.
Deep inside though I knew this was an opportunity. A chance to do things differently. I scaled back my work while I received some medical treatment. I had a full remission. And then I withdrew from maintenance treatment, from the medical model, and turned my attention full-time to my health.
Rather than ‘fighting’, I embarked on a journey of loving myself – my body, my mind and my spirit … my essential self – into the best health I could.
I found out which foods were healing, mostly plants, and which I should cut out, like sugar. I started to buy only organic food unless it was impossible.
I let go of all my old ideas about what my life should look like.
I changed everything about my lifestyle. I spent time BEing rather than DOing. I meditated a lot. I realised that happiness is available to me, right now, in the present moment by just being.
Essentially Being started as a blog to let family and friends know how I was going. Then I began to share daily affirmations on Facebook, a great way to make sure I did them as part of my daily practice.
We “teach to learn and we learn to teach.” It was a win-win situation.
What I learned
As you can imagine I’ve learned a lot. The top things?
Good health begins in the mind. What you think determines your state of being.
And if you train your mind, you can learn to make better choices for yourself.
Given the right conditions, the body can heal itself. Not always, but it’s possible.
Deep relaxation of the body not only triggers the relaxation response and healing, but feels like coming home.
Even when you think something is bad … really bad … it might not be. It might actually be a gift!
The small choices you make today become the life you live. And now I choose life …NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES.
Deep within each of us is a place of love, that is loving and loveable. Some call it the soul, others the Buddha nature. I call it the essential self.
Meditation is the means to connect with yourself, your essential self, while allowing you to move more gently in the world.
By being rather than doing, you find the “power of now”. There is no past, no future, no story, no judgment. It means being present to all that unfolds, in an open and spacious way.

After nearly dying from a compromised immune system in 2014, I am miraculously well, and moving back into the world. I made a video that explains everything I did to be on the road to good health to inspire and encourage you.
Meditation is a huge part of my life and I believe it’s why I now feel better than I’ve felt in a long time…Perhaps ever …
Not only has it given me the space I need to heal (my mind and spirit more than my body – that remains a work in progress), it’s allowed me to connect with myself and others in a whole new way. Love, gratitude and compassion are constant companions when once I knew only isolation, fear and stress.
When a study was released about the link between stress and cancer, Channel 9 News interviewed me about how meditation has helped me on my journey.
Through my work as a meditation instructor, health coach and running workshops, I hope to share with you all that I’ve learned and experienced so you too can find space for healing through just being, essentially being and then …

Fun facts about me
My secret pleasure is detective novels. I can disappear for days when I’ve got my nose in one.
I sing silly songs as I do household chores. They can be about cooking, washing dishes or the dogs eating possum poo.
They are not very memorable and I won’t be giving up my day job.
My laughter is infectious and my husband says I have a good sense of the ridiculous. Not sure if that’s a compliment or not (insert perplexed face).
My inspiration for studying law was Petrocelli which I watched religiously at 10. I was having a hard time deciding whether to be an actress or a detective. Petrocelli ran around trying to solve mysteries and then always performed well in court, getting the best result for his client. No wonder the law never really met my expectations – I never got a safari suit like his.
Jane Treleaven is a meditation and health coach empowering people to be happy and well by just being. Essentially Being. A former barrister, she moved from doing to being when she was confronted with a life-threatening condition in 2013.
